What is a toe kick?
The toe kick is the recessed space at the bottom front of the cabinets, just above the floor. As the name shows, the toe kick allows your feet’s toe to stand comfortably close to the cabinet while working in a kitchen or bathroom.
Toe kicks are commonly found in kitchen cabinets where they help you to work without having to stretch your feet. It allows you to work for a long period without obstructing your feet. It also enhances the finished look of the cabinet design.
The toe kick of bathroom vanity cabinets especially allows your feet’s toe to stand comfortably close to the base cabinet while using the sink.
Standard Toe Kick Dimensions
The standard toe kick height is 3.5 inches(8.9cm). However, it commonly goes up to 4 inches as many homeowners install 4 4-inch high toe kick or more then.
A height of more than 4 inches did not ruin the effectiveness of the toe kick. But it may slightly reduce the space of the cabinet. For example, if your cabinet’s height is 34 inches and you install 5 inches high toe kick then the storage inside the cabinet will reduce to 29 inches.
The depth of almost all the cabinet toe kicks is the same i.e. 3 inches(7.6cm). A depth of 3 inches allows your feet’s toe to stand comfortably close to the cabinet while working.
The depth is measured from the bottom front of the cabinet to the place where the toe kick is installed. This depth allows one to stand in a natural posture to get rid of back pain.
Face-framed Cabinet Toe Kick Dimensions
If you have to install face-framed cabinets then the dimensions of the toe kick will be different for them. The frame of the cabinet is commonly installed 1.5″-2 inches below the floor panel of the cabinet.
If you install the toe kick according to the standard dimensions, the toe kick will be almost covered by the frame. After including 2 inches of frame width, the uncovered height of the toe kick remains only 2 inches as in the figure.
For face-framed cabinets, must install a toe kick of height 6 inches(15.2cm). It included the 2 inches-wide frame and 4 inches-high toe kick.
Another method to measure the height of the toe kick for a framed cabinet is to mark the level of the bottom edge of the frame on the cabinet’s feet. After marking, include 4 inches (or the desired height of toe kick) below the mark in the measurements.
The depth of the toe kick is 3 inches(7.6cm). You can also increase it to 3.5 inches if you have big feet. It will allow your feet’s toes to stand comfortably close to the cabinet.
Frameless Cabinet Toe Kick Dimensions
The dimensions of the toe kick for the frameless cabinets are simple than the face-framed cabinet. There is no interruption of the width of the frame as in the figure.
So you have noticed the image which is of a frameless cabinet and there are only two measurements i.e. height and depth. The height of the toe kick for frameless cabinets is 4 inches(10cm) because there is no interruption of a 2 inches wide face frame.
The standard depth of the toe kick is 3 inches(7.6cm) for frameless cabinets. This depth allows your feet’s toes to stand comfortably if your feet are not big. If you have big feet then you can increase the depth to 3.5 inches to stand against the counter comfortably.
